First off, the video is definitely nswf. ;)
I came across this video the other day and thought it was really interesting the way media ultimately reshapes society. I’m not a big fan of plastic surgery and will always prefer women (and people in general) in their natural form. That being said, my initial feelings towards the practice of labiaplasty in general were ones of revolt and disgust. Especially in the context of doing so because that’s what someone, somewhere decided was what a woman’s genitalia was “supposed” to look like. And I think that’s bullshit.
However, as I was on my way to work this morning I thought about something that kind of changed my mind about it… the fact that I’m circumcised. How is that any different? I suppose you could bring up the medical implications of having all that extra foreskin, but let’s be real. I’ve seen what an uncircumcised penis looks like, and that shit is nasty. But, to be quite honest, I’m not sure that I would ever choose to circumcise myself if given the choice.
I’ve always believed people should be free to do whatever they choose so long as they’re not hurting someone else in the process. Wanna get a tattoo or pierce yourself - go for it! And now, that same sentiment holds true in this case as well. However, I still don’t believe you should modify your body because someone tells you to or because that’s what society (or some doctor, or some magazine) says you should look like. That’s just vanity.
